What we collect, and why
The newsletter
When you join the community, we collect your email address, and your first name if you give it. We use them to send Found This Week and the occasional message from us, and for nothing else. We keep them in our own database. We do not sell or share the list.
We use double opt-in. After you submit the form we email you a confirmation link, and you are only added to the list once you click it. If you never click, you are never emailed again, and the unconfirmed address stays pending until we clear it.
The emails are delivered by Resend, our email delivery provider, which handles the addresses only to send our mail. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing is one click, no login. Mail apps like Gmail also show their own unsubscribe button. If an address bounces or a recipient marks us as spam, we stop emailing it.
To limit abuse, the signup form stores a one-way hash of your IP address, not the address itself.
Affiliate links and cookies
Many links on this site are affiliate links. When you click one, we send you to the store, and the store, or its affiliate network such as Amazon Associates, Sovrn, Awin, or CJ, may set a cookie in your browser. That cookie is how the store knows to credit us if you buy. It costs you nothing extra.
Those cookies are set by the stores and networks, not by us, and are governed by their privacy policies. You can block or clear cookies in your browser settings. Doing so does not stop the site from working, but we will not be credited for purchases.
We also count outbound clicks ourselves, including clicks from our emails, so we know which finds are useful. Each click records the product, the page or campaign it came from, your country, and your browser’s user agent. It does not record your name or email address.
The contact form
If you send a message through the contact form, we keep your name, email address, and message so we can read and reply. A message does not add you to the newsletter; that only happens through the Join form.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used, such as which pages are read. It sets cookies and receives anonymized page-visit data. You can opt out with Google’s browser add-on or by blocking cookies.
What we don’t do
We do not sell your personal information. We do not run ads or track you across other sites ourselves.
Questions, or want your record deleted entirely? Unsubscribing stops the email; get in touch and we will delete it. How the affiliate links fund this site is on the disclosure page.
Some links earn Found in Black a commission at no cost to you. We only list what we’d buy.
